Race for the Cure® History
Our first Race was held in downtown Grand Rapids, MI in September of 1998. There were 1250 participants that helped raise over $100,000. In our banner year, 2001, our Race raised an amazing $275,000! We have drawn women, men and families from all over West Michigan. Participants range in age from infants to 70+! Due to downtown construction our Race location was moved two years ago to the RiverTown Crossings mall in Grandville, MI. This site provides a wonderful venue and course for the Race as well as convenient parking.
In our 8 years, we have had 24,200 participants and have raised over $1.5 million. The monies raised have allowed the local Komen Affiliate to award numerous grants to local organizations to fund screening, treatment, education and research projects. Each year thousands of women receive the life saving message of early detection from outreach projects sponsored by organizations such as Kent County's Women's Health Network and Saint Mary's Mercy Medical Breast Center. Funds are also allocated to community organizations that provide mammograms for the medically underserved.
